Two civilians were injured in clashes between mobs and security forces in Imphal city overnight and attempts to set fire to the houses of BJP leaders, officials said on Saturday.
In separate incidents, automatic firing was reported from Kwakta in Manipur's Bishnupur district and Kangvai in Churachandpur district during the night. An attempt was also made to loot the Iringbam Police Station in Imphal West. However, no weapons were stolen.
Army, Assam Rifles and Manipur Rapid Action Force took out joint marches till midnight through the state capital to stop the gathering of rioters. A crowd of approximately 1,000 people gathered to try to burn buildings near the palace complex.
The RAF used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. Another mob tried to set fire to the house of Biswajeet, MLA. However, the RAF column dispersed the crowd. Another mob surrounded the BJP office in Sinjemai after midnight but could not do any damage as it was dispersed by an army convoy.
